The Georgia Association of Curriculum and Instructional Supervisors (GACIS) was organized in April 1971 as a professional organization for persons working in the field of curriculum development and instructional supervision.
Prior to the organization of GACIS, two professional groups existed within the state to serve supervisory personnel. The Georgia Department of Instructional Supervision (GDIS), organized in 1955, provided the leadership for supervisors within the former Georgia Education Association (GEA). The Georgia Association of Jeanes Curriculum Directors (GAJCD), organized in 1942, concurrently provided the leadership for Jeanes supervisors within the former Georgia Teachers and Education Association (GTEA). In 1971, under the new parent organization, the Georgia Association of Educators (GAE), a landmark decision was made to merge these two existing groups, GDIS and GAJCD and become the Georgia Association of Curriculum and Instructional Supervisors (GACIS). A representative committee of persons from both groups was commissioned to develop a merger agreement that established policies for shared organizational leadership. The merger adopted by the combined membership became effective April 1, 1971 and remained as such for a period of nine years.
On July 22, 1975, The Georgia Association of Educational Leaders (GAEL) representing four organizations, GASS, GASSP, GAMSP, and GAESP, was organized and held its first meeting in Jekyll Island, GA. On February 29, 1976, GAEL voted unanimously to change the GAEL Constitution to accept members of GACIS. In July 1976, GACIS severed its relationship with GAE.
On February 12, 2007, the Georgia Association of Curriculum and Instructional Supervisors (GACIS) incorporated as a Domestic Non-Profit Section 501(c) (6) Corporation. On December 22, 2016, the incorporation was changed to a Section 501(c) (3) Non-profit Corporation.
GACIS promotes cooperative relations with and maintains direct contact with the Georgia Department of Education, Georgia General Assembly, teacher education institutions of the state and other educational organizations and agencies that impact public education. GACIS is one of the seven affiliate organizations of the Georgia Association of Educational Leaders (GAEL). Membership in GACIS is open to educators who hold supervisory, coordinating, instructional support, or consulting positions directly related to the improvement of instruction and curriculum development, or are instructors of curriculum and supervision in public and non-public schools, colleges, universities, Regional Educational Service Agencies (RESA), or the State Department of Education. Persons aspiring to leadership positions in these areas and retired persons are also eligible for membership.
