Steve Pemberton

Steve Pemberton is the Chief Human Resources Officer at Globoforce, the leading social recognition provider for companies worldwide. Prior to that he served as Chief Diversity Officer for Walgreens, becoming the first person to hold that position in the company’s 114 year history. He is widely considered a subject matter expert on matters of diversity and inclusion and its importance to the sustainability of organizations and the communities they serve. One of America’s most inspiring executives, Steve brings a deep personal understanding of human differences and the human experience to his position. He was a ward of the state for much of his childhood, an experience he chronicled in his 2012 best-selling memoir, A Chance in the World, which has been translated into multiple languages and inspired readers around the world. Now a motion picture, A Chance in the World has brought Steve’s extraordinary life journey to a national movie audience. Steve’s tireless advocacy for the disenfranchised has earned him numerous accolades. His dedication to public service and personal and professional achievement have also earned him Honorary Doctorates from Winston-Salem State University in 2014 and Boston College in 2015. In 2015, Steve was awarded the prestigious Horizon Award by the United States Congress, presented to individuals from the private sector who have contributed to expanding opportunities for all Americans through their own personal contributions, and who have set exceptional examples for young people through their successes in life.

Eric Sheninger

Eric Sheinger is an Associate Partner with the International Center for Leadership in Education (ICLE). Prior to this he was the award-winning Principal at New Milford High School. Under his leadership his school became a globally recognized model for innovative practices. Eric oversaw the successful implementation of several sustainable change initiatives that radically transformed the learning culture at his school while increasing achievement.

His work focuses on leading and learning in the digital age as a model for moving schools and districts forward. This has led to the formation of the Pillars of Digital. Leadership, a framework for all educators to initiate sustainable change to transform school cultures. As a result, Eric has emerged as an innovative leader, best-selling author, and sought-after speaker. His main focus is purposeful integration of technology to facilitate student learning, improve communications with stakeholders, enhance public relations, create a positive brand presence, discover opportunity, transform learning spaces, and help educators grow professionally.

Eric has received numerous awards and acknowledgements for his work and authored numerous books. In his latest book, Disruptive Thinking in our Classrooms: Preparing Learners for Their Future, Eric provides a guide to lead education in the future. Using research from the field as well as his own work coaching education leaders, Eric shares specify professional practices for the ever-changing “new normal” and to “future-proof learning for all kids”.

Keynote Speaker:
Devin Kearns

Devin Kearns, PhD, is an associate professor in the Department of Educational Psychology at the University of Connecticut (UConn). He researches reading disability—including dyslexia—in school-age children. Kevin’s research focuses on linking educational practice to cognitive science and neuroscience in collaboration with colleagues at Haskins Laboratories and the Brain Imaging Research Center at UConn. They examine how the brain changes across many reading lessons, underlying reading improvement, and test the effects of novel ways of teaching reading on students’ neurological processing while reading. Kevin and his collaborators are also developing and validating a game-based dyslexia screening app with the APPRISE Project.
